Premium Koi Pond Baktinetten are a filter starter, water conditioner, and nitrogen remover in one.

The most desirable and high-performance bacteria for pond filters belong to the Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter groups. A well-established pond filter contains only about 10,000 to 100,000 of these nitrifying autotrophic microorganisms per milliliter of biomass. Due to other single-celled organisms, such as ciliates, and multicellular organisms (e.g., nematodes), whose numbers are 100,000 times higher, there is intense competition for space in the filter. Under unfavorable conditions, the autotrophic microorganisms are the first to fall victim to this competition.

Premium Koi Pond Baktinetten contain approximately 5 x 10⁸ living autotrophic microorganisms per milliliter, which is about 500 times the normal concentration. These microorganisms biologically "inoculate" the filter and break down the nitrogen compounds ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate. Premium Koi Pond Baktinetten also remove heavy metals and chlorine from pond water.

Under an electron microscope, the Baktinette appears like an open-pored sponge. The material is completely permeated with beneficial bacteria.

In Premium Koi Pond Baktinetten, autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms are firmly bound in a biopolymer. The network structure can be clearly seen in this scanning electron microscope image. It offers protection against chemical and physical influences while remaining highly permeable to water and substrates.

Autotrophic Microorganisms

Autotrophic organisms can build their own body substances from very simple compounds (e.g., ammonium or nitrite). In the case of chemical metabolism, they are referred to as chemolithoautotrophic organisms. A very clear example of an autotrophic metabolism is photosynthesis. It enables plants as "photoautotrophic" metabolizers to also build their own body substances from CO₂.

Heterotrophic Microorganisms

Organisms are called heterotrophic if they rely on significantly more complex organic compounds as nutrients. A few species can break down nitrogen compounds. However, even the best heterotrophic strains are 1,000 times less efficient than autotrophic bacteria when it comes to nitrogen metabolism.
