Details

Throughout the year, our garden ponds are heavily exposed to environmental influences. Acid rain lowers the pH value, and strong sunlight increases the mineral consumption of aquatic plants. Even small changes in pH lead to significant fluctuations in the water's acidity. A sufficiently high carbonate hardness (ideally 8–8.5° dKH) is essential for a healthy koi pond, as it stabilizes the pH value. With a stable carbonate hardness, biochemical processes proceed undisturbed, so microorganisms and plants are not harmed by pH fluctuations. Ponds where carbonates are depleted no longer possess a stable acid-binding capacity, and a pH crash can occur.

Important: Regularly check the carbonate hardness. If it falls below KH 8, increase the hardness of the pond water with KH-Plus. Before putting your pond into winter dormancy, check the carbonate hardness and increase it if necessary. It's advisable to set the carbonate hardness two levels higher (KH 10) during the winter months, as you never know how long winter will last.
